The case studies developed by Working Group 2 are intended to serve as illustrations of the following topics as these have arisen and been addressed in specific subfields of linguistics:

  • Unicode character encoding standards for increasing stable display, readability, and sharing of data
  • Relational database storage
  • Wiki-based sharing of research
  • Metadata tags for increased transparency and usability of data
  • Version control
  • Web standards for sharing datasets
  • Machine reusability of language data

  1. Interlinearisation: Web-based collaborative annotation using TypeCraft
  2. NLP and linguistic data: What makes data suitable for machine use?
  3. Character encoding: Reasons for using Unicode
  4. Web standards: Web design for effective data-sharing
  5. Sociolinguistics case study: Collaborative research utilizing version control
  6. Typology: Genealogical classification using AutoTyp

We welcome the contribution of additional case studies regarding standards for data storage, search, and retrieval (and other relevant topics... there are many).
